Get Ahead Career-wise In Product Management

Question: Can you provide some insight on how to get ahead career-wise in product management?

Long ago, I saw a business card from the dot.com era. I guess the person was an executive in a startup whose job title was Papa Shark. This isn't a joke. It was an actual business card.

I remember realizing the implications of this odd title. The first and obvious is that titles could mean or matter less, and there will be a need for additional information to qualify the individual beyond their title.

Secondly, previously a person needed to show progressive work experience and go up the ranks to become an executive. Now tenure could be less important in obtaining a position and the associated title.

My conclusion regarding getting ahead in product management is that professional competency is a focus for many and remains necessary, but it will not suffice.

Many people are competent and have similar work and educational backgrounds. Hiring managers and recruiters know that.

Consequently, soft skills are emerging as the critical differentiating factor between individuals.

But overall, it is fundamental skills, not job titles, which are the new metric in the job market.
